Life safety can never be compromised

Many processes within wastewater treatment plants produce or require the use of toxic or combustible substances:

• Chlorine and ammonia are commonly used to treat the wastewater.
• Hydrogen sulfide is present in untreated wastewater containing raw sewage and can be generated as a byproduct of sludge treatment processes.
• Methane gas is also produced as a by-product of raw sewage and sludge decomposition.
• Oxygen depletion is also a potential hazard.

All of these hazards require protection for facility staff all across the plant, as illustrated below.

Wastewater fire and gas safety systems

Gas, smoke and flame detection are typically required by local regulations as well as by NFPA 820 “Standard for Fire Protection in Wastewater Treatment and Collection Facilities.” This standard and others describe the requirements for protecting both personnel and facilities involved with wastewater containment and treatment.
