High Voltage Direct Current Converter Stations

Trust the protection of your critical infrastructure HVDC facilities to Det-Tronics with more than 45 years of protecting the most demanding high-hazard, high-value processes world-wide.

Proven reliable protection for critical infrastructure

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter stations are the substations where direct current (DC) electricity at transmission voltages is converted (inverted) to lower-voltage alternating current (AC). Use of DC for bulk transmission has advantages over AC transmission that can include:

  • Reduced transmission losses
  • Lower cost of the transmission line construction
  • Able to link unsynchronized AC transmission systems
  • Able to transmit power between grid systems with different operating frequencies

A fire at one of these substations can put operating personnel at risk plus interrupt power supply to thousands of homes and businesses. Protecting these stations from fire present challenges ordinary fire and smoke detection systems cannot meet. Traditional fire safety systems suitable for commercial settings are too slow for adequate protection of these critical infrastructure installations. Also, they are reactive in nature, reducing the ability to operate staff to manage the threat before the discharge of suppression systems.

HVDC converter stations present serious detection challenges

  • High levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI)
  • Obstructions created by racks, transformers, switchgear and related equipment
  • Converter rooms (valve halls) are unstaffed during operation due to the hazards posed by the conversion operation
  • Must protect against both fire and arcs from switching operations

Authorities Having Jurisdiction rely on tested, listed or certified solutions

As is occurring in other high-hazard, critical process operations, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) are increasingly insisting on the use of tested, listed or certified systems. The reason is simple; the AHJs know that systems that meet or exceed codes and standards are the best way to maximize protection. Applicable codes, standards and best practices include:

  • NFPA 850 - Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Electric Generating Plants and High Voltage Direct Current Converter Stations
  • IEC 60076 - Power Transformers
  • IEEE 979 - Guide for Substation Fire Protection

A complete system from Det-Tronics is an ideal solution for these demanding applications. Backed by more than 45 years of solving the most challenging high-hazard fire and gas safety solutions, you can rely on Det-Tronics certified and listed solutions providing protection against fire hazards that pose severe threats to personnel, facilities and operational continuity.
